The Four Shells Kava Lounge is an inclusive vā (space) for all individuals to enjoy premium kava in a comfortable and ambient environment over meaningful talanoa (conversation).
Our lounge values are underpinned by the Tongan faai kavei koula (the four golden principles):
-Faka'apa'apa - respect
-Tauhivā - maintaining good relationships
-Mamahi'ime'a - being passionate about one's beliefs
- loto tō - Humility and being open
We hope to build a community that is built on these values, where everyone feels safe to try kava, learn about the ancient root and Pacific culture.
Established in 2019, we are a family run business passionate about kava/ava/awa.
Todd and 'Anau are not only passionate about drinking kava but also sharing the benefits of kava for one's hauora (wellbeing).
We acknowledge that this dream is a result of ancestors who have dreamed before us and navigated to new horizons, which has enable us to be where we are today - sharing kava with the world.
The wife of the duo, 'Anau, grew up in a traditional Tongan family that migrated to Aotearoa in 1982. As immigrants, 'Anau's family turned to what they knew best to survive - kava. Her father planted, grew, harvested and processed kava in Tonga to sell in Aotearoa and provide for his family.
Todd and 'Anau are proud to have now extended the story of 'Anau's parents and their passion for kava to now owning and operating Tamakai Makaurau city's first dedicated kava lounge.
Kava is an ancient plant that has been consumed for social, cultural, medicinal and political reasons for millennia.
Originally from the islands of the South Pacific, kava has recently become popular around the world. People across the globe value it for its rich cultural history and relaxing properties.
Some drink it for relief from stress, anxiety or insomnia. Others consume it for purely recreational or social purposes. Kava is known for its ability to promote relaxation, sociability and a feeling of harmony without diminishing judgement, mental clarity or awareness.
For many users, kava is a pleasant, slightly stimulating drink that relieves fatigue, relaxes the body after hard work or effort, clarifies the mind and brings a sense of well-being. As such, to many kava presents an attractive, non-addictive and healthier alternative to alcohol. When consumed with friends, kava can promote peace, tranquillity and cooperation.
